How we are supporting diversity and inclusion in our community
Starting at the grassroots to bring about positive change in diversity and inclusion through women’s football
Diversity and inclusion are central to LDNY People’s values and culture, and we are committed to actively promoting and supporting these values in our wider community.
As supporters of York City Ladies Football Club, we are proud to promote women’s football. We are supporting current and future leaders of our community to bring about change in the way women are seen and represented in sport, and further afield.
As part of International Women’s Day (IWD), we were delighted to speak to community member Lucy Pinter, who spoke to us about her experience as both a keen team sports player, and a woman in the construction engineering business.
Lucy told us, “there have been lots of conversations around the inequality for women in sport in the wake of the Lionesses’ triumph at the 2022 Euros. One topic being the discomfort that women face with sportswear, most of which is designed on aesthetic rather than performance.
We must change the focus. Let’s get women-led sportswear designers and organisations leading the way in the production of sportswear. Let’s make sportswear that women want by changing bottoms to a colour that’s not white, adding an extra few inches onto the bottoms of shorts/skirts, making sports bra’s more customisable, designing trainers that are suitable for smaller, narrower feet; just to name a few”.
“It’s the same in business. Uniform policies are still largely governed by men who hold the majority of leadership positions. We need more women from diverse backgrounds to be recruited into these leadership positions and have a voice in the future of women’s sportswear and also PPE.”
But what change can we make? Starting off at home LDNY People know that as parents, we can lead by example and support change by lobbying local clubs and professional clubs to have women’s kits available to buy. The Lionesses have made a massive impact in girls and women’s football. The ‘Women’s Super League’ is full of star players, and as parents we need to buy our daughters replica strips with the name of one of these super stars on the shirts.
To help bring about this change, LDNY People are working with York City Ladies FC to have replica kits available from next season. These might seem like tiny steps, but they are significant moves in providing choice and promoting diversity. We are proud to be showing the way forward for others to follow.
