The effects of climate change dominate the news right now. The construction sector is a significant user of fossil fuels and other natural resources. The role of Sustainability Leader is increasingly important as the sector transitions to delivering more sustainable developments, which could include net zero cities, and the retrofitting of existing communities to deal with the effects of climate change (heat/cold/flooding) is a hugely rewarding career, leaving an important legacy footprint in the communities you work.
Sustainability leadership is a broad role which increasingly includes Stakeholder & Social Value Engagement Leadership as communities now seek active involvement in project design and approval, desiring a say in decisions impacting their areas.
The construction sector around the world is booming and if we look forward a couple of decades, we see no slow down. In fact, the forecast really is quite the opposite. There are many social and political factors driving the global construction economy, which is estimated to grow by over 30% by 2030 to $15.2 Trillion (Oxford Economics, 2021), and expected to double up again to reach $30 trillion by 2050 (Vairagi et al., 2023).
Carbon management, increasing reliance on renewable energy, strong social value from public opinion and legislation will drive changes in how business operates and sustainability leadership will be critical in every business. The backdrop of sustainability offers many routes in to business for graduates from many different backgrounds and critically opens up career routes from non-STEM graduates.
